My name is Torie Wojick. I am a first-year graduate student at Emerson College and will graduate with a master’s in media art in 2017. Knowing that my dream of working as a film editor in Boston after graduation might not come to fruition is heartbreaking. I’m from Connecticut originally and have already witnessed the loss of a similar tax incentive there (I was among the last participants in the Connecticut Film Industry Training Program).

Moving to Boston last summer was one of the happiest times of my life. I saw so much hope for my future. I would rather not have to move to California, NY, or Vancouver. I’ve been a New Englander my whole life and I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

My name is Cheryl Eagan-Donovan. I’m a documentary filmmaker and screenwriter who makes films in Massachusetts. I also teach film and screenwriting to students. I not only work in the local film industry, I provide opportunities for other professionals to be part of our creative economy. The Massachusetts film tax incentive is crucial to our industry. I urge you to learn more about its impact and take the lead to support the Massachusetts film industry.

My name is Stephen McCarthy, and for more than 30 years, Boston has been my home base as a documentary cinematographer. I’m a native of Arlington, MA, and my teenaged daughter is a student in the Boston Public Schools. My work has taken me to every state in the Union and to more than 40 countries around the world. A thriving motion picture production community means that I’m able to draw on the knowledge, skills, and infrastructure of a mature, professional workforce that is on par with the area’s world-class scientific, academic, and artistic resources. It’s quite clear to me that the tax incentive has succeeded not only in attracting producers to the state to make movies but in sustaining a technologically sophisticated local community of filmmakers well-equipped to explain to the world the cutting-edge scientific, medical, and technology advances being made here.
